March 2010

17th March's issue features National Science & Engineering Week with the Science Museum team entertaining 4 local primary schools and Burnham Upper alongside our Y7 and Y8 students with their show It Takes Guts! followed by a chair designing extension activity for our top Y7-9 science students. We also had the Y8 Bloodhound SSC day. The eggs have been hatching this week in reception to much excitement and prompting much debate about what we eat, and debate continued when Lord Howe stopped by to make a visit.

10th March's issue features more photos from our successful dance show; News on our Sports Relief activities and student achievements plus Student Council ideas from our students on p2; and Chris Short's winning Crime Writing short story on p3

3rd March's issue features our special video made at Dorney Lake with James Cracknell for the second STEMnet Olympic Challenge; our Year 11 work experience awards assembly, and photos and comments from our spectacular Dance Show.

February 2010

24th February's issue features our Year 10 and 11 celebration assembly photos, the Year 7 Community webpage project, news of the International School Foundation Award, news of our own website update and our charity fund-raising events.

10th February's issue features three generations of teaching at BGS on the front page as we look forward to 50 years in existence. There are also reports on the Hat for Haiti —student-led appeal on p2; a report on Y11 Poetry Live! and voting in the Bucks Youth Parliament takes place on p3; there's a report from Café-Sci of ex-student Jack O'Reilly & the Rotary come in to talk about the Tall Ships opportunity on p4.

3rd February's issue focuses on the Bucks Youth Parliament elections as BGS has 4 candidates standing; we have 2 outstanding student achievements and Café-Sci report on page 2; an Opportunities page - 50th Birthday dinners, creative writing, Burnham Youth Club & an invitation for parents on page 4.

January 2010

27th January's issue focuses on Maps galore as The Ordnance Survey donate the local Chiltern Hills East map to all our Year 7 Geography students, and there are more photos of the Burnham Village fieldwork on p2; Haiti appeal news, and the restart for Café-Sci by a new Y12 team on p3; and news on the Auction of Promises with sample Lots on p4.

20th January's issue focuses on the Year 7 Geography fieldwork trips around Burnham Village. We celebrate the excellent results on CVA adjusted exam results (there's an explanantion of CVA too!) and there's an update on the news of the Auction of Promises. 4th November's issue covers the community initiative against arson as Y8 experience a drama and workshop looking at the dangers of starting fires. There are reports on inter-form sport competitions, news on the PTA' s latest purchase for BGS students resources and can you help by joining the 250 Club and attend the Art & Craft Fair next weekend - please! Also advice on Swine Flu precautions and the Remembrance Day activities.

October 2009

21st October's issue reveals our updated School's Aims. We hear from several students who have been looking outside their school studies and turning attention to life outside of school: reporting from the London Fashion Week; a lecture on Maths & Business Studies; and a report on Skills For Life which helps Y11 prepare for November's work experience week. Finally lots of activites are happening over half-term and we hear from the Bike It! crew.

14th October's issue covers the Freshers' Fair for Y7 encouraging them to take up at least one extra-curricular club. We have news from our new Head of Music and his plans for music at BGS, reports on trips to Windsor Arts festival and the medicinal Physic Garden in Chelsea, and don't forget the competition to create the image for our digital mosaic for the 50th Birthday Celebrations.

7th October's issue reports on the Daily Mail Cup rugby when England star Will Greenwood came to give the boys a motivational team talk; a report on the Sports Leadership Award which Year 11 have received after their work with the community in Year 10; a trip around Parliament and news about our new Careers office. Don't forget to put in your diary the PTA Art & Craft Fair happening here on 13th - 15th November, with student art on exhibit, the start of the 50th Birthday celebration mosaic and lots of stalls to buy Christmas goodies (or to indulge yourself with).

September 2009

30th September's issue reports on our 3 students who have won places at Oxford University; our trip for next year's possible candidates who went to Oxford University's open day and a 6th form seminar on learning and aspirations. The Languages Week activities are reported in more detail and 7E's media reps report on their trip to Intech Science Museum during their space camp.


23rd September's
issue carries lots of colourful photos of Year 7's World Extravaganza event from our Open Evening; news from the rugby pitch and one of our students' experience at a work placement with Lonza (he left Y13 in the summer); an advert from the PTA for their Art & Craft Fair and we hope many more parents will sign up for their 250 Club; and a report on one of the first activities during Languages Week about Royal Holloway lecturer Frank Engleman who came in to talk about combining a language with other degrees, and also gave our students an insight on modern German emotions about their country's WW2 history - fascinating!

18th September's issue carries photos on our Open Evening, news from the library and art departments; report by the winning team of Y9 cricketers; and news from languages as we head towards Language Week activities next week
